Polycystic Kidney Disease is a genetic condition whereby the patient is
affected with the growth of multiple cysts upon the kidneys, resulting in an
abnormal increase in kidney size and decrease of kidney function. Patients
should avoid foods that may potentially accelerate the progression of the
disease. Caffeine-containing foods and beverages are poor choices for people
with PKD.
Persons with PKD should avoid caffeine due to reasons as below:
▪ It interferes with a natural substances in the body known as
phosphodiesterase that helps to prevent the formation of cysts.
▪ It can cause the cysts to grow, accelerating disease progression, worsening
the condition and promoting further kidney damage.
▪ Chronic consumption of it may lead to increased blood pressure, which is
one of the main risks of PKD. Hypertension increases patient's risk of having a
heart attack, stroke and other health problems.
Therefore, patients with PKD should avoid coffee, non-herbal tea, chocolate
and some sodas. Even decaf coffee contains trace amounts of caffeine, varing by
brand. Dark chocolates have more content than lighter ones.
Other foods that should be avoided for people with PKD
Salty foods
They are high in sodium, and containing excess amounts of this mineral can
increase the blood pressure and the risk for heart disease. Particularly
high-sodium foods include table salt, cured and processed meats, canned soups
and vegetables, prepared tomato sauce and frozen can canned entrees.
Dairy products
These foods may increase the kidneys' burden and result in dehydration. Avoid
Cheddar, Parmesan, and Romano cheeses. The intake should be limited to 1 oz.
weekly.
