Polycystic Kidney Disease is a condition in which non-cancerous, water-filled
cysts grow in the kidneys. It is a genetic condition caused by abnormal genes.
Patients may not experience any of the symptoms for years and without knowing
they have the disease. How to diagnose PKD? Will MRI be used to detect this
illness?
MRI
This is the exam to document the progress of liver and renal cysts. It is a
method of obtaining very detailed images of the body without x-rays, without
radiation. This process involves uses a powerful magnetic field, radio waves, a
rapidly changing magnetic field, an a computer to demonstrate if there is an
injury or some disease process present.
● It can give a detailed view of the number of cysts present;
● It may also be used to detect smaller cysts that cannot be found by an
ultrasound;
● It is used to measure and monitor volume and growth of kidneys and
cysts;
● This imaging test may may provide a clear picture than a CT scan, so it can
be used to check whether the patient develop an brain aneurysm.
Other exams and tests used to diagnose PKD
Examination may show hypertension (high blood pressure), kidney or abdominal
masses, abdominal tenderness over the liver, and liver enlargement.
A urinalysis may show protein and/or blood in the urine. And, a cerebral
angiography may show associated aneurysms.
Cysts on the liver or other organs can be detected with tests including
abdominal ultrasound, abdominal CT scan, abdominal MRI scan, IVP, etc.
