The Reason for Hemorrhage in PKD

PKD is characterized by numerous fluid-filled cysts in the kidneys. Over time, the cysts grow and multiply, replacing healthy tissue and causing the kidneys to lose their function. Kidney can enlarge to 3 to 4 times their normal size. Symptoms vary from none to a variety of problems such as hemorrhage, pain, infection in the urine, and kidney failure. Here, we mainly introduce the reason for hemorrhage in PKD.

* Urinary infection

This is a common reason for PKD hemorrhage. Urinary tract infections (UTIs), which include cystitis, nephropyelitis, cyst infection and perinephric abscess, are not uncommon for a person with Polycystic Kidney Disease. During patients' lifetime, approximately 30 to 50 percent of them will get affected by a urinary tract infection. Hence, urinary infection act as a major reason for renal cysts bleeding.

* Triggers in daily life

There are many triggers that may increase the risk of cysts rupture, such as:

Constipation.

Lifting heavy things.

Trauma to abdomen.

Wearing trousers with tighten belt.

All these factor may lead to PKD hemorrhage. Never lift something with excessive forces. Use a gallus rather than belt to hold up the pants. Avoid demanding sports or exercise like rugby and basement.

* Drinks high in caffeine

Drinks containing caffeine, such as coffee and cola, can result in the growth of the cysts, and finally ending up with its rupture. So, patients should avoid such drinks.

The usual treatment for hemorrhage in PKD includes bed rest and increasing fluids until this problem is relieved. If bleeding does not stop with bed rest and increased fluids, a surgery to stop the hemorrhage may be required.
