PKD, polycystic kidney disease occurs as a result of gene mutations or result
from heredity. Can PKD parents pass on faulty gene to Children? The good news is
your children have a chance not to carry the faulty genes, while the bad news
your children have a high risk to suffer polycystic kidneys.
Normally speaking, if one parent has medical history of PKD, his or her
children have a 50% change to receive this disease. However, if both of parents
have it, the morbidity in their children is 75%. Your children can inherit two
types of PKD—ADPKD or ARPKD.
Autosomal Dominant PKD
In some cases, only one parent has to pass on a PKD gene in order to make
their children get the risk for this disease. Two mutated genes should be
responsible for ADPKD, that is, PKD1, which accounts for 85% of cases, and PKD2,
which accounts for 15% of cases.
Autosomal Recessive PKD
In ARPKD, both parents muse have PKD gene and pass it on in order to make
their child have the disease. However, if the child only receive only one faulty
gene, he or she is considered as carrier. They may not develop Polycystic
Kidneys, but may pass it to next generation.
If both parents are unaffected carriers, the heredity rate for their children
to get PKD is a one chance in four.
Children whose parent (s) is PKD patient tend to get a higher risk than those
whose parent (s) is not. In other words, parents with PKD have a chance to pass
mutated gene to their child.
There is no cure of PKD available, surgical removal and oriental medicines
are common treatments. When PKD develops into renal failure, analysis or kidney
transplant will become necessary. Therefore, early treatment means a lot in
delaying renal failure. If you worry passing on faulty genes to your children,
