Will Patients Have Dependence on Dialysis

With the development of the disease of Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) patients’ renal function will be damaged gradually. Then patients have to take dialysis. With time going on, many patients have the experience that their dialysis times increase from once a week to three times a week. So many patients wonder whether this is because they have dependence on the dialysis. Will patients really have dependence on the dialysis?

I want to ask the patients a question: why does every one of us need to have meals every day? Is this because we have dependence on the food? No, it is not because we have dependence on food. Having meals is the normal need of the human body. Just like having meals, taking dialysis is the need of the damaged kidneys. As we all know that dialysis is also called “artificial kidney”, which means that the function of dialysis is to replace the human kidneys to work. But dialysis is just an adjuvant therapy for the kidney diseases. It takes no measures for the causes and damage of kidney. During the period of taking dialysis, the kidneys are continuously being damaged. So the dialysis times will gradually increase.

Therefore, when the kidney is damaged to certain level, dialysis is necessary. On one hand dialysis can relieve the burden of the kidneys and reduce the damage caused by the retented harmful substances. At the same time, dialysis can provide a relatively clear environment for other treatment methods.

However, to treat kidney diseases, dialysis is not the fundamental therapy. Besides, it will bring great economic and life burden for the patients. In addition to dialysis, patients should take fundamental therapy to control the development of the kidney diseases proceeding from the root causes.
