Diverticulosis and Adult PKD

Autosomal Dominant (Adult) PKD is one of the commonest genetic diseases. In America, there are five hundred thousand sufferers with this disorder. 50 percent of them will be in Renal Failure by the age of 60. 10 percent of all people undergoing dialysis are doing so due to this disease. Here, we mainly talk about an gastrointestinal complication of Adult PKD, diverticulosis.

Diverticulosis

Diverticula are small herniations or pouches (sacs) that may develop in the wall of the large intestines. When these herniations are filled with feces, the feces can get trapped there and become not be eliminated with the rest of the bowel movement.

Diverticulosis is used to describe the condition that there are many diverticula. This occurs more often in people with PKD who are on dialysis or have had a kidney transplant than any other renal disease. Also, these persons tend to have more complications from this condition like infection called diverticulitis.

Apart from the digestive system, Adult PKD may cause other systemic problems through affecting the excretory system and cardiovascular system.

Excretory system

Healthy kidneys are responsible for filtering the blood, reabsorbing 98 percent of the filtrate and regulating the blood composition. In addition, the kidneys can produce important hormones like erythropoietin, renin, and calcitriol. Renin is a vital hormone which can regulate the blood pressure.

Cardiovascular system

Adult PKD can also affect the cardiovascular system, as it puts the person at risk for high blood pressure, intracranial aneurysms, and MVP. With persistent and long-term high blood pressure, heart damage can be caused. About 50 percent of patients with PKD die from the heart and vascular complications of PKD, not Kidney Failure.
