Polycystic Kidney Disease and Flaxseed Oil


Flaxseed oil is a natural occurring oil which is derived from the seeds of a blue flowering plant called flax. It is grown in the prairies of western Canada and in the northwest US. There are many nutritional benefits for those who consume it regularly. Is it good for people with Polycystic Kidney Disease?

Flaxseed oil has been shown to help ease the symptoms of PKD. It is an excellent source of a group of fatty acids (omega-3-fatty acids) that are considered to have anti-hypertensive, lipid-lowering and anti-inflammatory effects. All these benefits can help reduce inflammation and slow the progression of PKD.

1. Lower blood pressure. Study revealed modest but notable reduction in blood pressure in persons consuming 2 grams of omega-3 fatty acids each day.

2. Reduce triglyceride levels. High omega-3 fatty acids diet also improve the proportion of bad cholesterol, or low-density lipoproteins, to good fat, or high-density lipoproteins in the blood.

3. Decrease the risk of heart disease. It contain a high quantity of alphalinolenic acid (ALA), which is believed to have direct heart health benefits, such as reducing the risk of irregular heart beat.

4. Improve bone health. ALA can prevent bone loss and inflammation.

In the daily diet, people with PKD should avoid foods as below:

▪ Avoid excessive quantity of salt. This includes products such as processed foods soups, chips and soy sauce.

▪ Avoid caffeine that can be found in coffee, chocolate, black tea, green tea, white tea, cola, etc.

▪ Limit drinking alcohol to 2 per day for male and 1 per day for female.
