18cm~19cm Kidneys, No Symptoms, Normal Creatinine, Do I Need Treat My PKD

Q: I am 20years old. My kidneys are 18cm and 19cm. I have no symptoms and complications now. I was diagnosed as PKD after a Urinary Tract Infection. My Creatinine level is normal, do I need treatment for PKD?

A: Creatinine is the most important item to judge the damaged degree of kidneys. If creatinine is higher than normal range, it indicates at least 50% kidney function has been damaged.

Each person has two kidneys but only one kidney is enough to satisfy the demand of human body. If someone's kidney function was damaged 30-50%, they may not feel any discomforts. Your sister's creatinine is 1.2mg/dl, which is in normal range. It can't stand for the 100% normal kidney function.

The normal size of kidney is about 10cm~12cm. It is not hard to judge that 18cm-19cm kidney condition is very serious. Early treatment is suggested for this condition. If your PKD treatment was delayed, the kidney functions will be damaged and deteriorate into kidney failure in the future. When you grow older, your PKD may advance to ESRD.

We can see, the poor prognosis of PKD is caused by the enlargement of cysts. The best way to treat PKD is to control the size of the cysts. At present, you need at least follow the diet principles for patients with PKD.

Meantime, you should take medical measures to control the further growth of renal cysts. It is the continuous secretion of watery sacs that keep kidney cysts enlarging. By far, there is no western medicine which can take effect in control the size of renal cysts. Luckily, Chinese Herbal Medicine provides a solution for it. As some herbs can affect the epithelia cells where cyst fluids generate, therefore, they can contribute to control the further enlargement of renal cyst.

Meantime, Chinese herbs can shrink the existed renal cyst through dilating renal blood vessels and increasing the permeability of cyst wall. Thereby, you can expect your renal cysts shrink naturally and don’t grow any more.
