How Does Western Medicine Treat PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease)

PKD (polycystic kidney disease) is known as numerous cysts growing in kidneys. Over time, growing renal cysts will squeeze neighboring renal tissues and organs, causing serious damages to kidneys. Western medicine, as the commonest treatment for most disease, how does it treat PKD?

Normally, the Western Doctor will suggest PKD to follow these procedures:

1) When the kidney cysts are small, the doctor will do nothing medical for patients, but suggest them observe the body change, and do the medical tests regularly.

2) As PKD develops, some complications will appear and doctors will prescript some drugs to alleviate the complication. For example, if the patients present high blood pressure, doctors will suggest them to take the medicines for high blood pressure.

3) If the kidney cysts become bigger, and their local doctors usually suggest them to receive the surgery to remove the kidney cysts, the surgery is like a needle to puncture in to the kidneys, then abstract the cystic liquid from the cysts, the advantage of this surgery is remove the kidney cysts quickly. The disadvantage of this disease is the kidney cysts will re-grow after the surgery, meanwhile the surgery will damage the kidney function, it is very easy to cause the bleeding in the process of surgery.

4) When the kidney cysts become big enough and kidney functions drop greatly, the doctors will suggest the patient to receive the dialysis to maintain the normal life, especially when their GFR is lower than 15.

5) If patient with PKD only take dialysis only, without any other treatment to improve renal function. Several months/year, the kidney function become worse and worse and the patient have to receive the kidney transplant.

As the most common treatment method, western medicine does do a good job to save people from kidney disease. It can alleviate symptoms of PKD in a short time and take effects in delaying its complications. However, medicine only can not take effects on the underlying renal cysts, thereby, many patients can not avoid the renal failure eventually.

We suggest patients take the conjunctive treatment of Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine, for they two can optimize the curative effects, because Chinese medicine take great effects in controlling renal cysts and improve renal function, while western medicine does good job in eliminating symptoms. In this way, PKD patients are expected the best therapeutic effects. If you need more help, you can mail to kidney-treatment@hotmail.com
