PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease) is known as numerous cysts in kidneys. As
renal cysts keep enlarging constantly, most patients fail to the escape the fate
of dialysis. Seeing parent (s) suffering from dialysis, many patients-to-be are
usually frightened to ask when is my time to start dialysis.
In terms of many cases, PKD usually manifests no symptoms before the first
twenty years. Early signals tend to happen in one’s 30s, when some discomforts
appears, such asflank pain, abdominal distension and high blood pressure etc. As
the cysts grow in size and in number, elevated serum creatinine level and
further complications interfere with kidney functions in one’s 40s. There will
occur kidney failure in one’s 50s when most patients began endless dialysis.
Some patients even start dialysis earlier than expected. In fact, dialysis
can be avoided on the condition of early and right treatment, as well as good
diet management. However, there are still many patients who are following the
“destined” routine of PKD.
In one’s 30s, most PKD patients are begin to worry about when polycystic
kidneys will attack them. Meantime, many of them tend to take fluke mind that
they may be not associated with the faulty genes, so they take no medical
measure, except some diet changes.
In one’s 40s, most of them begin to take anti-hypertension drugs, such as ACE
(angiotensin-converting enzyme) inhibitors, and other medicines for alleviating
symptoms. Some of them have already made surgical removals once or more
times.
In one’s 50s, the major medical measures they take usually aims at delaying
the renal failure and other complications, such as polycystic liver cysts.
Several years later, most of them are on dialysis eventually.
From above, we can see most patients try different measures in alleviating
their renal cysts. However, why most patients fail to get ride of dialysis
eventually?
The answer is that they fail to stop the growth of the renal cysts from start
to finish. It is just like that: somebody turns on the water tap and you begin
to bail out the water in your room instead of turning off the tap. There is no
doubt that you and your room will be submerged sooner or later. That says, as
long as the cysts keep enlarging, they will damages surrounding kidney tissues
and causes renal failure to occur.
Therefore, only the measures can stop the growth of cysts, can patients with
PKD have the chance to avoid dialysis. In other words, when is your time to
start dialysis or even avoid dialysis depends on you—what treatment you choose.
