Diet Tips for the Patients of PKD

It is well know that reasonable daily life and diets habits play an important role in the treatment of the disease of Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD), which is a genetic disease. Although there's no cure for it yet, there are some measures to take to restrain the growth of the cysts and what you eat can also have a real effect on how fast the condition progresses. There are some tips for the diets of the patients of PKD.

Follow a Low-Protein Diet

Eat less meat, cheese, and even a little less of the higher protein beans and legumes like chickpeas and lentils. Use vegetables and grains for your main dishes and if you need extra calories, add healthy fats like avocados and olive oil.

Low-salt diet

Try to use less of sauces like ketchup and soy sauce. Avoid highly processed foods like meats, soups, and vegetables that come in cans. Even low-sodium varieties of these have more salt that something you'd make at home.

Vitamins and Minerals

Vitamin and mineral supplements are frequently needed since dietary restrictions may prevent a renal patient from receiving all the needed nutrients necessary for a healthy and balanced diet. Kidney dialysis can also remove vitamins from the bloodstream. Vitamin supplements should only be prescribed by a physician in patients with kidney disease.

The prognosis

The disease gets worse slowly, eventually resulting in end-stage kidney failure. It is also associated with liver disease, including infection of liver cysts.

There are great individual differences for patients of PKD. If the patients have much more complications, and is under Uremia, the prognosis is bad. Some patients may have renal insufficiency, but there are not any complications, the disease may progress slowly, and the prognosis will be better. Generally when there appear symptoms the survival time may be about 10 years. If the patients don’t have dialysis or kidney transplant, the average age at death is about 50 years old. The main reasons of death of PKD are kidney failure, cardiac failure, intracranial hemorrhage and lung infection etc.
