Autosomal dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease is a genetic kidney disease and
does not need special treatment in the early age and without obvious symptoms.
It is recommend that strenuous exercise and actions which may oppress abdomen
should be avoided. The belt should not be kept too tight to prevent the rupture
of renal cysts when they are big. However, when these symptoms caused by this
disease, such as pain in waist or abdomen, hematuria and proteinuria, enlarged
renal cysts, high blood pressure, damaged renal functions, appear, some
treatments should be taken.
Firstly, control high blood pressure. Well controlled high blood pressure
plays an important role in the protection of kidneys. According to the mechanism
of high blood pressure, angiotension-converting enzyme inhibitors are the first
choice among all the antihypertensive medications. Other antihypertensive
medications, such as calcium antagonists, vasodilator and diuretics can be
applied according to the detailed conditions.
Secondly, protect the urinary tract infection actively. Urinary tract
infection also may do harm for the kidneys, so protecting the urinary tract from
being infected is necessary for the patients especially the female patients.
Thirdly, deal with gross hematuria effectively. Hematuria is one of the
common signs of this disease and often goes away or be relieved after stay in
bed for several days. When the hematuria is too severe to be controlled, the
surgery of renal artery embolization is to be operated. Aprotinin and
desmopressin can also be considered under such conditions.
Fourthly, treat the disease combining with stones and intracranial tumors.
Experienced operators will be needed for the patients who are also suffering
from kidney stones, because it is difficult to remove the stone by operation or
lithotripsy. It is better up for observation to those patients who also get
intracranial tumors whose diameter is below 1cm and do not have any symptoms. If
the diameter is lager than 1cm, operation should be considered.
Fifthly, others things should be noticed. The treatment for the patients with
ADPKD is the same with those without ADPKD when they have renal insufficiency or
stay in the end stage of renal failure.
What the content talks about is only a brief of the current treatment of
ADPKD, which can not get very effective results. If you want to learn more about
