Running and Polycystic Kidney Disease
Polycystic Kidney Disease results when cysts form in the kidneys, eventually enlarging the kidneys and leading to decreased kidney function, often progress to kidney failure. The truth is that there is not yet a cure for this disease. However, we can slow down its development through lifestyle changes. Exercise is an important part of the treatment for this disorder. Here, we'd like to talk about running and PKD.
One the the complications associated with this disease is hypertension (high blood pressure). Regular exercise can help to control your blood pressure and make you feel better. Running is recommended for PKD patients. 30 minutes of exercise most days of the week is a good goal.
Besides, walking, jogging, swimming, golfing, biking, and rowing is also permissible.
Mind-body workouts such as yoga, tai chi and stretching can also be very beneficial to those with Polycystic Kidney Disease. These exercises emphasis on concentrated breathing and relaxation, which help to relieve stress, lower blood pressure, and manage the pain.
However, contact sports like football and basketball are discouraged, as a blow to the enlarge kidneys will lead to further damage, including ruptured cysts. Others like horseback riding, cross-country biking, and other repetitive impact sports had better be avoided, because they can cause blood in urine. Any activity that can potentially lead to kidney trauma or injury should be avoided.
While doing exercises, there are several precautions to take for patients.
