Cause of Increased Serum Creatinine for PKD Patients

Serum Creatinine is an important index in reflecting renal function. Creatinine is the metabolic product of creatine in muscle. Every 20 grams muscle can produce 1 gram creatinine. In normal condition, creatinine can be released into blood and then will be discharged out of body by kidney. Therefore, the creatinine level can keep its normal range within 0.6 to 1.2mg/dL (50-110mmol/L), but some reference value may vary with different hospitals.

However, for PKD patients, if they do not receive effective prevention and treatment, their cyst will enlarge kidney tissues persistently. As a result, the enlarged cysts will oppress the kidney tissues thus causing renal ischemia and anoxia. As kidneys can not get sufficient oxgen and blood supplement, it can initiate fibrosis of kidney thus causing glomerulosclerosis. As a result, the kidneys will lose it normal filtration function so the creatinine will accumulate in body. Therefore, the patients’ creatinine level will increase.

In fact, creatinine level is not a very sensitive index in assessing renal function. In most cases, the PKD patients’ creatinine level does not increase until they lose more than half of their renal function. Therefore, the patients should quit their wrong opinion that if their creatinine level does not increase, their kidneys do not have damage at all. Once patients notice their creatinine level increase, they should not delay their treatment any longer.

In order to decrease creatinine level, the PKD patients should receive proper treatment to prevent the enlargement of cysts. Then on this base, they can further repair the damaged renal function so as to recover their normal kidney filtration function. If so, their kidneys will be able to dischrge the toxins and wastes in body normally so the creatinine level will recover the normal level.

In a word, if patients can get a proper treatment, they will certainly be able to decrease their creatinine level. If you are confused about how to decrease your high creatinine, please consult us on line or email to kidneyfailurecn@hotmail.com.
