Is Kiwi Fruit Good for Polycystic Kidney Disease Patients

The primary function of our kidneys is to excrete excessive fluid and waste materials from the blood stream. The kidneys then take these filters substances and create urine from them. If you have Polycystic Kidney Disease, your kidneys may not function properly. As a result, wastes and fluid can accumulate to dangerous levels in the blood. Kiwi fruit, also known as yang tao or Chinese gooseberry, is a kind of popular fruit among lots of people. Then, is it good for people with PKD?

Like most fruits, kiwi fruit is high in the mineral potassium. One cup of green kiwi slices contains 562 mg of potassium. As for gold kiwi slices, there is 588 mg of potassium per 1-cup serving. This amount is higher than a serving of other common sources, such as 422 mg in a banana, the 372 mg in a glass of orange juice, and the 448 mg in a 1/2-cup serving of squash.

For people with PKD, the diseased kidneys cannot remove potassium from the blood properly. Potassium can help control the heart beat, and too much intake of it will lead to abnormal heart beat. So you are suggested to eliminate high-potassium foods from your dietary arrangement. Therefore, kiwi fruit is not good for you to eat.

Besides, high-potassium foods, such as bananas, potatoes, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, apricots, cooked spinach, prunes, dates, dried zante currants and raisins, dried figs and coconut, avocados, oranges, etc, should also be avoided. The following gives several pieces of suggestions on diet for your reference.

▪ If you cannot give up meat, restrict yourself to 3 oz. per week of non-oil fish, lamb, or game birds. The worst meat choices are poultry, pork, beef and ground meats.

▪ Dairy products increase the kidney's workload. Added salt contained in most ice cream and cheese will increase blood pressure. So Cheddar, Parmesan, and Romano cheeses should be avoided.
