Dialysis diet needs to control the intake of potassium, phosphorus and

1. Replenish high-quality protein.
Protein should be restricted but that is not to say you do not need protein.
The principle of protein intake is to have high-quality protein but less
protein. High-quality protein food includes milk, beef, egg and fish. The amount
of protein is different from person to person depending on the frequency of
dialysis.
2. Enough calories.
Patients undergoing hemodialysis should be provided with 125-145kj/kg/d.
Dialysis people easily lose protein and what make things worse is nausea and
vomiting before dialysis which make them undernutrition. Enough calories is
helpful for them to keep dry weight. The calories are mainly from fat and
carbohydrate. It is encourage that people more often eat plant oil.
3. Seriously control the fluid intake.
4. Control the food rich in potassium.
High level potassium can cause heart problem even DEATH! So people on
dialysis need to control the potassium amount. Some food rich in potassium
includes banana, mushroom, tomato, spinach, peach, carrot, bamboo shoots and so
on.
5. Control the intake of sodium and phosphorus.
The amount of salt one day is 3-5g/d. For people who have no urine, it is
1-2g/d. People with Chronic renal failure easily get hyperphosphatemia which is
a co-morbidities of dialysis. Doctor suggests that amount of phosphorus is
800-1000mg/d.
6. Replenish vitamin and mineral substance.
People with hemodialysis need to be provided with vitamin and substance
especially vitamin B and C.
