Clinically, Urinary Tract Infections is one of the most common symptoms of
PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease) patients.
PKD patients can present Urinary Tract Infections (UTI) including: cystitis,
pyelonephritis, cysts infection and perinephric abscess. About 20% PKD patients,
Urinary Tract Infection is the primary symptom of PKD, which is more common in
females. 50%-70% patients will experience Urinary Tract Infection at least once
in their life. When Urinary Tract Infection occurs, patients should prolong
their time of taking antibiotics. It is very difficult to cure Urinary Tract
Infection and most cases will progress into prinephric abscess or sepsis. Severe
cases might lead to death. Therefore, patients should prevent and treat Urinary
Tract Infection, which needs highly attention.
Besides Urinary Tract Infection (UTI), high blood pressure, hematuria and
back pain are also very common symptoms of PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease). I
will introduce them separately.
High blood pressure: most PKD patients can not notice they have high blood
pressure. Actually, high blood pressure predates other PKD symptoms. High blood
pressure can not only do great harms but also stimulate the growth of kidney
cysts. Patients should take measures to control their high blood pressure under
your doctor’s guidance.
Hematuria: most patients do not realize PKD really matters when they suffer
from hematuria. Hematuria can be caused by the cysts burst and damage of kidney
units. Most patients will be prescribed some hemostatic medicines to control
it.
Back pain (flank pain): the growth of the cysts will enlarge the kidneys. The
enlarged kidneys can oppress the nearby organs and lead to back pain. What is
more, the dragged renal capsule can affect its local nerves, causing back pain.
Additionally, if sharp pain occurs, it can be caused by cysts infection, cysts
broken and so on.
The above are the PKD symptoms mainly. They can be relieved temporarily by
taking medicines. However, what patients really need to do is shrinking the
cysts to clear the root.
