Dietary Advice for Kidney Patients on Dialysis

When kidney patients start dialysis, their digestive tract would be better and their appetite would improve. Patients should have a high-protein diet, because on one hand dialysis would discharge the metabolic wastes in the body, on the other hand, the metabolic rate of protein would increase and some protein might be lost during the process of dialysis.

Below is some advice for kidney patients on dialysis.

1. protein

The daily required amount of protein for kidney patients on dialysis is 1.0-1.5g per kilogram. For example, if the patient weighs 50 kilograms, he needs 50 to 75 grams of protein every day. The animal protein rich in the necessary amino acid is recommended, such as egg white, dairy products, fish, poultry and lean meat.

2. energy

The source of energy should mainly from carbohydrate and lipid.

Generally speaking, a kidney patient on dialysis needs at least 35 kilocalories for every kilogram of his weight every day, so that the patient could have a metabolic balance.

The daily intake of carbohydrate should be 5 to 6 grams for every kilogram, and the daily intake of lipid should be 1.3 to 1.7 grams for every kilogram, which mainly should be plant fat.

3.sodium

Kidney patients should have a light diet, and avoid high-salt diet. The daily intake of salt should be between three to five grams, so that the retention of sodium and water would not happen. For patients with severe high blood pressure or edema, they should limit their salt intake within three grams.

4. potassium

Kidney patients on dialysis do not need to take medicines to supplement their potassium. Rather, they should limit the high-potassium foods, and daily intake of potassium should be two to three grams.

For patients who have less urine volume and hyperkalemia, they should limit the intake of potassium. But for patients who have lost potassium because of vomit and diahhrea, they should supplement potassium with the help of the doctors.

Hyperkalemia could lead to severe arrhythmia, even cardiac arrest. Most kidney patients on dialysis would have a high potassium level in the blood, so high-potassium foods should be avoided.

5. calcium and phosphorus

Kidney patients on dialysis should limit the intake of phosphorus. High intake of phosphorus could cause hyperparathyroidism and metabolic bone disease.

If patients have hypocalcemia, they should take medicines to supplement their calcium. Because the gastrointestinal tract does not absorb the calcium efficiently, so the medicines should be taken for a long time.

Overall, patients should use different recipes to stimulate the appetite, increase nutrition and strengthen their body.
