Adult Polycystic Kidney Disease (APKD) is characterized by large cysts in
kidney, which leads to kidney failure if not treated. As this genetic disease
doesn’t develop fast before the age of 30s, so it is known as “adult polycystic
kidney disease.”
Cause
Abnormal genes inherited from parents cause this disease, which leads to PKD
running in families. Adult PKD is also known as ADPKD, which accounts for 95% of
the total cases. If father or mother gets the disease, the children have at
least 50% of chance to get affected.
Symptoms
When you develop Adult Polycystic Kidney Disease, you may feel no discomforts
before 30~40 years old. As the disease interferes with the kidneys, symptoms
occur gradually.
The common symptoms of PKD include high blood pressure, renal stones, liver
cysts, frequent urination, urinary tract infection, increased size of abdomen,
back pain, flank pain, side pain etc.
Treatment
Treatment of Polycystic Kidney Disease is highly specialized which deals with
shrinking renal cysts, improve kidney function, alleviate symptoms, prevent
kidney failure anddialysis etc.
Treatment for the disease includes:
● detecting and treating complications, such as anti-hypertensive drugs,
antibiotics, pain killer etc.
● monitoring and managing PKD in an effort to extent the life of the
kidneys.
● surgery. Use surgery to drain the larger cysts to smaller, decreasing the
force to kidney tissues.
● Chinese herbs. Use herbs to shrink renal cysts and liver cyst naturally,
preventing further kidney function decline.
● Immunotherapy. Use Immunotherapy to develop and improve kidney functions in
a not long period.
Prognosis
As there is no cure for PKD, it usually leads to a poor prognosis. If
untreated, the disease will be rapidly fatal or continue to progress slowly,
even after symptoms of kidney failure appear. More than 50% of cases will
develop into the kidney failure and lead to dialysis or kidney transplant.
However, many adult PKD patients prevent from kidney failure, because they
choose right treatment, diet and lifestyle.
