Polycystic kidney disease is known as a genetic kidney disease in which
numerous fluid-filled cysts develop on the surface or inside the kidneys. If
uncontrolled, the disease will develops long term effects for patients.
Will I pass it on my children?
This disease is a genetic kidney disease which runs in family. If father or
mother was diagnosed with such a disease, the child will have 50% possibility to
develop into PKD. If both parents are PKD’ers, their children will have 75% of
chances to get the faulty genes
Symptoms and complication
Most people have this disorder without no symptoms or complications until at
the age of 30s or 40s. Over a several years, you may suffer from high blood
pressure, cyst rupture, sharp back pain, urinary tract infection, kidney stones,
enlarged abdomen etc.
Dialysis or kidney transplant
As the cyst fluids keep secreting, the cysts will become larger and larger,
which will force the nearby kidney tissues. If the kidney damages can not be
controlled well,Polycystic Kidney Disease will develop into kidney failure. In
this condition, your doctor may suggest dialysis or kidney transplant.
According to your kidney function and general health condition, you may need
to take dialysis 1~4 times per week or even more.
Before kidney transplant, you need register on the waiting list of donated
kidneys. Many patients pass away before they get a matched organ.
Having a baby
PKD patients have the right to become parent. However, you should choose a
right time according to your kidney condition and general health condition. As
enlarged cysts can drop down the kidney functions, you may step into kidney
failure stage where you are not suggested to get pregnant. Kidney failure can
trigger miscarriage.
For patients with lower kidney functions, Immunotherapy are suggested to
