Exercise and sports is a very aspect of our lives, which goes for dialysis
patients. Patients on dialysis have a lower exercise capacity than the people
with normal kidneys. Thereby, the exercise or sports for dialysis is
different.
We conclude that a program of low-impact exercise with low to moderate
intensity is safe and beneficial, that risks can be minimized but patients need
to be screened and evaluated.
According to the nephrologist, low-impact exercise with low to moderate
intensity is safe and beneficial, that risks can be minimized. However, no
matter what kind of exercise or sports you want to do, you need have a talk with
your doctor at first. There exists risk for dialysis patients when they do some
sports.
What’s the recommended exercise and sport?
● The recommended exercise or sport for dialysis patients is about 30 minutes
per session. Dialysis patients are not suggested to take sport on the basis of
heart rate only. Instead, one must monitor for signs and symptoms of
exertion.
● As for any strenuous sports or any live contact exercise, such as
basketball and rugby, volleyball etc, should be avoided, because there is much
exercise done of our body. These sports are hard and harmful for patients on
dialysis.
● Low to moderate intensity sports or exercise is better. Gym, walking and
jogging are suggested. Meantime, other mild sports, such as golf, Tai Chi
etc.
● Sports with heavy furniture are not allowed. For example, when you play
volleyball, you are hitting the ball very hard with your hands and forearms.
This is easy to destroy your fistula. Meantime, heavy bat will consume a
lot.
Well managed exercise and sports in daily life can help dialysis patients
improve physical condition gradually. It creates peer pressure to stay an active
and healthy. However, if you want to lead a full life, dialysis plus exercise
can not make sense. You need treatments focusing on your impaired kidneys to
improve renal functions. Only in this way, can you have a chance to get rid of
dialysis and live a full life.
