Hot dog is the popular food throughout the world. It is delicious and easy to
make. However, does it goes for patients with Polycystic Kidney Disease?
Although there is no cure for Polycystic Kidney Disease yet, what you eat can
have a real effect on how your kidney conditions progresses. A well diet
management can control the symptoms of PKD and keep your polycystic kidneys
better in a longer time. Thereby, you should know clearly about the food you
should or should not take.
With the respect common hot dog, is it a choice for patients with Polycystic
Kidney Disease?
The answer is no. Any patients with PKD should keep far away from hot dog and
even the people with healthy kidneys should limit the amount of hot dogs the
eat.
Hot dog is filled wit processed meat and this tells you that you should avois
these foods for it contains more salt and fat which will burden your impaired
polycystic kidneys.
Hot dogs are low in nutritional value but high in salt and potassium, which
can lead to high blood pressure/hypertension and heart problem, accelerating the
progression of PKD.
Hot dogs contain nitrites which are used as preservatives, primarily to
combat botulism. During the cooking process, nitrites combine with amines
naturally present in meat to form carcinogenic N-nitroso compounds. It is also
suspected that nitrites can combine with amines in the human stomach to form
N-nitroso compounds. These compounds are known carcinogens and have been
associated with cancer of the oral cavity, urinary bladder, esophagus, stomach
and brain. All these will shorten your health and your healthy kidneys.
As doctor Levin said that a hot dog a day could send your kidneys to an early
grave, thereby, patients with PKD should avoid or at least limit consuming hot
dogs.
Instead, patients should take more fruits and vegetables. All these food are
healthy. Meantime, they should take less processed meats, such as hot dog, deli
meat, hamburger etc.
In order to make your polycystic kidneys work better, you also need to know
clearly about other common foods and tell whether they are beneficial or harm to
your PKD. These foods include coffee, chocolate, hamburger, milk, egg etc. If
you are not sure the real effect about the food you are taking on your kidneys,
