Many patients on dialysis complaints low blood pressure after or during
dialysis. The low blood pressure also leads to painful muscle cramps, faint,
nausea and vomiting etc. Why low blood pressure happens after dialysis? Can I
stop it?
One of the major job for dialysis is to remove the excess fluids out of the
body. There are three kinds of fluids in your body: fluids in your cells, fluids
in your tissues and fluids in your bloodstream. Dialysis can not remove all
kinds of liquid. It only takes effect to cleanse the water in your blood.
Many patients may find their feet swelling after dialysis. If so, fluids are
in your tissues instead of in your blood and only a small quantity of the water
weight you gain is in your blood.
When patients are on dialysis, the pressure will push the fluids in your
blood flowing into dialysate. Due to vascular refilling, the liquids from tissue
and cells will go to your bloodstream, so it can be removed. Thereby, there is
only so much water in your blood during the dialysis. However, dialysis aims at
weighting without excess water, so it will continue to push, no matter the
fluids is in your blood or not. As a result, your blood becomes too “dry”,
making your blood pressure level falling down.
What’s the risk of low blood pressure during dialysis?
When you finish your 3~4 dialysis treatment, you may experience dehydration,
muscle cramps, vomiting and faint etc.
If you are on dialysis for a long time, low blood pressure will cause heart
problems, such as heart attack, heart failure and stroke etc.
How to prevent it?
Here are some advices for your reference: be sure your dry weight is right;
consider home dialysis; ensure your dialysis machine is set correctly; take
Immunotherapy into consider for it helps many cases get rid of dialysis. If you are suffering from low blood
pressure after dialysis or other symptoms, you can mail to kidney-treatment@hotmail.com
