A diet can be healthy to retard the progression of Polycystic Kidney Disease
(PKD), or harmful to worsen your polycystic kidneys. Avoiding the food harmful
for your PKD can keep your kidney healthier in a longer time.
1. Coffee. Coffee contains much caffeine which can stimulate cyclic AMP and
create further growth of cysts. Meantime, caffeine can increase the risk of high
blood pressure, thus worsens your polycystic kidneys.
2. Chocolate. Similar with coffee, chocolate is another major resource of
caffeine. Even in Valentine’s Day, you’d better watch out chocolate.
3. Alcohol. Alcohol should be on the avoided diet list for any kidney disease
patients, including polycystic kidneys. Alcohol is stimulating drinks which can
accelerate the complications of the disease.
4. Pizza. Most pizza crust contains much fat, such as cheese, butter and
carbohydrate etc. Meantime pizza is made with rich salt and roast meat. All
these will stimulate your impaired kidneys and burden kidney’s work.
5. Pasta. The “regular” pasta which you usually get outside should not be a
choice for patients with Polycystic Kidney Disease. Standard pasta is made with
refined wheat flour, creamy sauce and cheese, which is really harmful for your
impaired kidneys.
6. Cola. Cola contains many materials harmful for PKD patients. It includes
caffeine and high phosphorus etc.
7. Hamburger. Even though hamburger is popular and fast to cook, it is not a
good choice for patients with PKD. Hamburger is rich in potassium and phosphorus
and fired meat, which can be deadly if you have advanced PKD.
8. Curry food. As a famous Indian food, curry dishes spread all through the
world already. Hot and spicy curry food or curry food with many flavorings
should be removed from the diet list for PKD patients.
9. Fast food. Most fast food is known as junk food, which is not only harmful
for healthy people but also can be deadly factors for PKD patients.
10. Highly processed food. Almost highly processed foods contain more
seasoning than other foods. This high processed food is higher in salt,
phosphorus and fat, which will stimulate PKD to progress fast.
