Polycystic Kidney and Frequent Urination at Night (Nocturia)
Polycystic Kidney Disease is an inherited disorder that causes numerous cysts on the kidneys. Over time, the growth of numerous cysts enlarges the kidneys while interfering with their functioning. The symptoms of PKD frequently do not show up until affected persons are well into adulthood. Frequent and excessive urination, especially at night, can be commonly seen in people with the disease. Look at what a patient has said:
"I have autosomal PKD and am approaching stage 4. I am 76 years old next month. I have apparently a very large cyst on each kidney about the size of a small adult fist. Then there are very many more of different sizes, completely covering the kidneys. I do have to pass urine very many times during the day and am not able to hold it back. During the night, I sleep about 2 hours before waking up to go urinate."
But, do you know what causes frequent urination at night in PKD? Do kidney cysts cause blood urine? Maybe you can find answer from the following explanation.
Normally, during nighttime, the metabolism of the body will decrease and the blood flow slows down. Initial urine can be reabsorbed by renal tubules. Urination at night is obviously less than that of daytime.
However, if the kidneys are damaged, such as people with PKD, their kidney function can be damaged. With reduced renal concentration ability, patients will experience frequent urination at night, or nocturia.
Another cause is due to the damage of renal tubules. So their reabsorption ability reduces. The substances that have not been absorbed will run off, leading to increased urine output.
Now, we are clear about the cause of your problem. Then, how can we eliminate the symptom? Maybe you have guess what the answer is. The correct treatment is definitely to repair the damaged kidney function through slow down the growth of PKD cysts and shrink them in size gradually.
