Diets and Nutrition Care for Kidney Disease Patients after Dialysis (Hemodialysis)

Traditional Chinese Medicine theory always attaches great importance to dietary therapy. For example, in the Neijing, it stressed “attacking a pathogenic factor with a poisonous drug, cultivating the body by five kinds of grains, assisting the body by five kinds of fruits, benefiting the body by five kinds of domestic animals, fulfilling the body by five kinds of vegetables”.

Likewise, favorable diets and nutrition care are important for the patients after dialysis. According the summary of the clinical practice, the patients who are doing dialysis need to obey the following diets principles.

1, take in proper amount of protein

1) For patients who take dialysis three times a week, the intake of protein should be 1.5g/Kg of weight per day.

2) For the patients who take dialysis twice per week, the intake of protein should be 1g/Kg of weight per day.

And the high quality protein should account for more than 50%. For example, the patients can have one egg and 200ml pure milk or two eggs (but one eat one yolk) and 100ml milk, which accounts for 12-15g high quality protein.

2, take in enough calorie.

Usually, the patients need to take in 35-40Kcal/Kg of weight per day. And the patients should take in food that contains low vegetable protein while high calorie, such as sweet potatoes and silk noodles. In the diet, the fat should account for less than 30% and the cholesterol should be less than 300mg per day. The patients should eat less fatty and fried food. And choose the plant oil instead of animal oil to cook.

3, make a good control of the intake of water and salt (sodium), which is rather important for improving the life quality of patients, relieving the edema, avoiding heart failure and controlling the high blood pressure.

4, don’t take in food rich in potassium and phosphorous.

The hyperkalemia is very common among the patients doing dialysis. Besides, due to the remove obstacle of phosphorous and the secondary hyperparathyroidism, the patients should control the intake of the phosphorous.

All in all, favorable diets and nutrition care can help to control the patients’ weight and reduce the complications of dialysis, realizing taking dialysis without symptoms. By this, we can improve the patients’ life quality and prolong the patients’ life.
