A Feedback Letter about A PKD Patient

Cysts were examined out on my mother’s bilateral kidneys, how should we do?
In 2004, my mother was checked out Polycystic Kidney Disease (hereinafter called PKD) which is an inherited disease according to my knowledge. But there is no inheritance history in my mother’s family. She was diagnosed as bilateral Polycystic Kidney and her left kidney had a cyst with size of 2.5 X2cm, right kidney had two cysts with size of 2.9*3.7cm. Then how to treat this disease? What should we pay attention to?

Expert Reply:Generally, PKD is inherited. But it can also be a primary disease which your mother’s condition may belongs to. If no proper and prompt treatment, It usually develops into Renal Failure.

Cysts are usually removed by tapping or cyst decortication in Western Medicine Treatment, but both of them are makeshifts. Admittedly, these operations can remove or shrink cysts so big cysts’ pressures to Renal parenchyma lows down. Meanwhile, small cysts also have small pressures so they grow rapidly and compress nephrons again. Therefore patients have to take another operation. Patients not only waste much money but suffer from more pains and mental frustrations.

In China, Micro-Chinese Medicine Osmotherapy becomes more and more popular, which is characterized by external application. Patients can get treated without operation and injection. This treatment has a bidirectional opsonic action to cysts. That is, it can not only restrain secretion of cyst wall but speed up the reabsorption of sac liquid. With our overseas department developing, more and more foreign patients have come to our hospital for treatment and attained pleasant therapeutic effect.

As a PKD patient, your mother probably has high blood pressure. If so, she can take Lescol and Lotensin. She can take medicines absorbing Serum Creatinine like Coated Aldehyde Oxystarch and Uremic Clearance Granule, if her renal function was damaged.

Because of its inheritance, you, as her immediate children, need to take Type-B Ultrasound Examination regularly. If single cyst occurs, it can be treated with anhydrous alcohol.

With regard to the diet, patients cannot eat beans product, abyssal fishes, shellfish, animal pluck and shell foodstuff. Salt intake cannot be more than 5g each day, if renal function is damaged seriously, they must not take salt over 3g each day.

Patients can eat more freshwater fish, 250g milk, some lean meat and no limit about vegetable each day. Patients are prohibited to take food with high phosphorus. If your mother’s creatinine is over 700μmol/L, she needs to take dialysis which can be hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis.
