How to Nurse PKD Patients with Complications

I, Hematuria

Nearly 60~80% of PKD patients has different extent of Microscopic Hematuria, and some patients may present gross Hematuria. To eliminate small amount of bleeding through kidney rapidly, patients are advised to drink much water, in addition to staying in bed. The variation of urine color needs figuring out so as to judge that Hematuria aggravates or reduces. If PKD patients have obvious Hematuria, they should stay in bed for a long time. Moreover, hemostatic styptic should be injected into human body through vein promptly, and blood transfusion can be conducted if necessary.

II, Perirenal Hematoma

Patients need to stay in bed absolutely after taking Renal Biopsy within 24hrs. To get patients’ cooperation, doctors can inform them of the importance of staying in bed absolutely and potential complications of severe activities, in case that patients cannot endure staying in bed. If patients have no gross Hematuria and stay in bed for 24hrs, they can do some moderate activities gradually but not increase activities abruptly so as to avoid the secondary bleeding when the wound does not heal completely. At this moment, patients should be prohibited to do more exercises and get adequate cares in daily life. If Perirenal Hematoma is found by Type-B Ultrasound Examination, patients need to extend the time of staying in bed.

III, Lumbago and waist discomfort

Most of patients have slight ipsilateral lumbago and waist discomfort which lasts nearly one week usually. In most cases, ordinary painkiller can be given to moderate the symptoms. PKD patients with Perirenal Hematoma usually suffer from severe lumbago, in this case, patients can take narcotic analgesic agent to relieve the pain.

IV, Stomachache and Abdominal Distension

Some individuals feel stomachache after Renal Biopsy, which lasts 1-7 days usually and small number of patients have pressing pain and rebound tenderness. Life habit changing, abdominal belt pressing and drinking more water cause patients to present abdominal distension which does not need special treatment. Patients with obvious stomachache and abdominal distension can take lactasin or spasmolytic to relieve the symptoms.

V, Pyrexia

Patients with Perirenal Hematoma may present medium Pyrexia due to Hematoma absorption. They should be nursed as per fever patients and given proper medicine for treatment.
