Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) is a chronic kidney disease. In order to
delay its progression, besides effective treatment, a health care also play an
important role on this point. Then, what should patients with PKD do in their
daily life?
1. Keep a healthy diet
As many patients with PKD may have edema with varying degrees for retention
of water and sodium in their body, they should limit their salt intake within 3
grams per day. Moreover, they should limit their protein intake properly based
on their own disease condition. After proteins enter body, they can produce its
metabolin: blood urea nitrogen. As patients’ kidney damage, they can not
discharge them out thus causing further damage to their kidneys. However, as
some PKD patients with Renal Failure they may lose mass protein in the dialysis,
they should not limit their protein intake any longer, but should increase its
intake with their doctors’ guidance.
2. Avoid violent exercise and trauma
With the enlargement of cysts, the pressure in the cysts will also increase.
Some patients can touch masses on their abdomen. In this case, even if a mild
knock at their abdomen may cause cysts to burst. Therefore, the patients with
PKD should avoid violent exercise and trauma in their life.
3. Develop a healthy habit
Patients with PKD should quit smoking and drinking. With the enlargement of
cysts, most of patients will have Hypertensions with different degrees. We all
know cigarettes contain much nicotine, which can cause thick blood vessels wall
thus affecting blood circulation. As a result, it will aggravate the original
Hypertension. Therefore, the patients with PKD should quit smoking. In addition,
alcohol can improve the activity of cysts’ epithelial cell thus secreting more
cyst fluid. In order to prevent the growth of cysts, the patients with PKD
should quit drinking.
4. Control blood pressure within normal range
High blood pressure is a dangerous factor in causing renal damage. Therefore,
the patients with PKD should keep their blood pressure within 130/80 mmHg. If
the need to control their blood pressure with the help of medicine, they should
choose those without renal toxicity under their doctors’ guidance.
