Prognosis of Polycystic Kidney Disease varies with different patients. If the
patients are accompanied with many complications, their prognosisis bad.
Generally speaking, the earlier the clinical symptoms appear, the worse the
prognosis is. Most of patients with PKD can live about ten years after the
appearance of clinical symptoms. If they do not receive dialysis, kidney
transplant or other relative treatment, their mean death age is about 50 years
old. The main causes of death include Renal Failure, Heart Failure and so on.
The following risk factors influence the prognosis of PKD.
1. Infection
Various infections can make the internal environment change, which can make
the activity of cysts increase thus promoting the growth of cysts. For patients
with PKD, infections on every body part can cause damage to renal function.
After patients get infection, the infection virus can enter blood and then
affect kidney through blood circulation. Therefore, the patients with PKD should
avoid various kinds of infections such as colds, urinary tract infection, and
skin infection and so on. No matter virus infection or bacteria infection, they
all have influence on growth of cysts.
2. Toxin
Toxins can activate on body thus damaging va gentamicinrious cell tissues.
Some common medicines can do much harm to kidney such as kanamycin, rifampicin,
indomethacin and so on. Therefore, the patients with PKD should avoid taking the
above medicines.
3. Unhealthy emotion
Once people are diagnosed with PKD, they often have too mental pressure on
themselves. However, according to some researches, unhealthy emotion can cause
nerve and endocrine disorder thus influencing internal environment by body fluid
and nerve. In return, the abnormal change of internal environment can affect the
growth of cysts. In addition, unhealthy emotion also can decline immunity. As a
result, it is easier for virus and bacteria to invade into body. Therefore, it
is very important for patients with PKD to keep an optimistic mood and
confidence in defeating the disease.
4. Pregnancy
According to some researches, if women with PKD have a few pregnancies,
usually the prognosis of the disease is bad. About 1/4 of women with PKD will
present Hypertension or their primary Hypertension will be severer after
pregnancies.
Besides the above four factors, the patients with PKD should develop a
healthy dietary habit so as to get a better prognosis.
