If PKD patients can not take active treatment to control their disease when
symptoms of Renal Insufficiency appear, this disease may develop into terrible
Uremia. As for PKD patients who suffering from Renal Insufficiency, what should
they do to protect their kidneys?
Illness condition of most patients develops into Renal Insufficiency due to
improper treatment or delayed treatment. For this reason, the first thing should
be done is to adopt effective treatment to treat PKD in order to control cyst
growing or even shrink cysts, which can decrease pressure on kidney tissue
caused by cysts and reduce kidney tissue injury. Besides active and effective
treatment, a proper diet is also required.
Firstly, PKD patients who suffer from Renal Insufficiency should have a
proper protein intake which is the origin of most metabolic products. For this
reason, protein intake should adapt to the excreting function of kidney. For
example, when serum creatinine is in the range of 170 to 440 umol/L, protein
intake is better in 0.6g/kg and if patients have serious proteinuria, 1.5g
protein can be added according to 1g losing protein in urine. If serum
creatinine is more than 440 umol/L. protein intake should be reduced further and
control under 30g per day. However, if patients limit their protein intake
unscientifically, they may have malnutrition and worse body condition, which is
not better to patients.
Secondly, in order to make ingested protein have the largest utilization and
prevent ingested protein turning into energy, when PKD patients limit their
protein intake, they should take enough energy in a level at least 35
kilocalorie per kilogram body weight in 24 hours. This can mainly provided by
sugar.
Thirdly, some foods are not suitable to be taken though these foods are in
the range of the above two points because these foods are rich in phosphorus
which can cause kidney function decline further once phosphorus deposit in body.
These foods include egg yolk, dried meat floss, animal innards as well as dairy
products and bone marrow, etc. In order to reduce phosphorus content, some foods
like fish, meat and potato, should be boiled in water firstly and then cooked
for meals. The boiled soup should not be taken.
Fourthly, salt intake should be limited according to individual illness
condition. As for PKD patients, if they have symptoms of Hypertension or Edema,
they should have a diet with low salt, within 2g per day.
Meanwhile, PKD patients should avoid nephrotoxic medicines which can injure
kidney. Some other diseases like Hypertension, Diabetes and infections should be
paid high attention because these diseases can also damage kidney and aggravate
kidney function.
