When Polycystic Kidney Disease develops to kidney failure, patients will
register in the waiting list for donated kidneys. Are patients with PKD
successful with a kidney transplant?
Are patients with PKD successful with a kidney transplant?
Even though kidney transplant leads to many risks, many patients are
successful with a kidney transplant. However, as PKD is a genetic kidney
disease, which related to the faulty genes, more than 20% of cases are found to
experience the relapse of PKD after the kidney transplant.
Some researcher said that if the recipient can live longer enough, they also
have the chance to undergo the renal cysts again. As many recipients get the
implantation after their 50s, faulty genes may not develop fast to trigger the
PKD before they die.
Why some patients with PKD are not successful after a kidney transplant?
Different with other kidney disease, Polycystic Kidney Disease is caused by
the faulty genes. Any people with PKD genes have the great chance to get the
disease. Kidney Transplant can not remove the PKD genes from patients, this is
why patients undergo the relapse of PKD after kidney transplant.
As long as the “second strike” that affects the immune system, happens in
recipients, they are expected to receive the failure of kidney transplant. The
“second strike” which can trigger the PKD again includes cold, serious
rejection, flu, infections, fever etc.
Is there any alternative treatment to kidney transplant?
The common alternative treatment to kidney transplant is dialysis. Dialysis
treatment helps remove the toxins and waste products, as well as excess fluids
from the blood, so as to keep patients alive.
Another alternative treatment is Chinese herbal medicine, which can affect
the immunity and lining cells to stop the growth of renal cysts. Meantime,
Chinese Herbal Medicine can shrink the renal cysts naturally. As long as the
renal cysts are controlled, surely the kidney functions will stop to drop. For
PKD patients whose kidney functions are more than 30%, only Chinese herbal
medicine can avoid kidney transplant.
For patients whose kidney functions are less than 30%, Immunotherapy is
suggested which can supply new healthy renal cells to improve kidney functions.
Once kidney functions are improved enough, dialysis and kidney transplant will
not be necessary.
