PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease) usually develops into Renal Failure without
prompt control of renal cysts in size or in number. Why PKD develops into Renal
Failure? Many patients with PKD ask this questions, here is a answer for a PKD
patients who are 42years old with creatinine level1.3.
The reason why patients with PKD develops to kidney failure is that the
enlargement of the cysts will pressure the around renal tissues and cause renal
ischemia and anoxia, which start renal fibrosis. Gradually more glomeruli and
tubules are sclerotic due to lack of blood and oxygen supply.
Patients with PKD will have high blood pressure in 30s, renal function
decline in 40s and Renal Failure in 50s. You are just 42 and your serum
creatinine is only 1.3. If treated now, there is much chance that the disease
can be controlled and renal function protected. At least we should slow down the
progressing of the disease so that we can avoid dialysis in the 50s.
The medical science is developing very fast nowadays and I believe there will
be a cure for PKD in future when genes treatment is mature. Therefore we should
live positively and receive active treatment.
I don’t know whether you are on diet control, but it is very important. You
should avoid spicy food and stimulating food. Never drink alcohol or smoke
cigarettes. Though the renal function is in normal range, but the creatinine is
at the highest limit, so low protein and low salt diet is necessary.
