After diagnosed with Polycystic Kidney Disease, patients concern whether they
will pass down the disease to next generation and what’s the incidence rate of
polycystic kidney disease.
At present, polycystic Kidney Disease is considered as hereditary by most of
the medical scientists, but the lucky news is that the child will not get the
disease with 100% possibility.
As the matter of fact, there is a tendency of familial aggregation. Both male
and female may be the victim, and the possibility of them are the same. It may
pass down for several generations in succession.
In other words, it is a same chance that the disease happens in male and
female. Generally, if both parents have PKD, the incidence of PKD will be 75%
for their next generation. However, if only father or mother have the disease
history, the child will have 50% chance to get the disease. Thereby, PKD is
easily found to go around the family. By this reason, your doctor will recommend
your family members to take tests to check whether they get the chance of PKD or
not.
If one of the family members is diagnosed with PKD, you are suggested to take
the following tests in case.
Firstly, your symptoms can be a proof for PKD and the signs can be high blood
pressure, enlarged or tender kidneys, enlarged liver and protein or blood in
urine.
With the respect of tests, An abdominal ultrasound is usually the test of
first choice to detect the presence of cysts on the kidneys. If cysts are too
small to be detected by ultrasound and the diagnosis is still in question, an
abdominal CT scan or MRI scan may be performed.
If your condition still can not be diagnosed, additional examination may be
preformed, including as follows.
● Gene linkage study-a blood test that tests the DNA of the patient and
family members with and without PKD.
● Direct DNA sequencing-blood sample of patient's DNA to look for presence of
the PKD gene.
As for the control of PKD, there is no effect option, including surgery, in
western medicine. However, Traditional Chinese Medicine offers different formula
to various conditions of PKD, which claims to stop the growth of renal cysts and
help cleansing away renal cysts naturally.
