Q: Here is a message with a medical test report that we received. This
patient suffers from PKD, weak Parenchyma, GFR 55.4 and she wants to know
whether she can have a baby in such a condition.
A: I have had your condition analyzed, as you are planning for giving birth
to another baby, I strongly suggest your taking treatment before getting
pregnant.
The sonogram shows the biggest are 5-6cm in diameter, and weak Parenchyma on
both sides. For one thing, pregnancy gives more burden to your kidneys and that
might accelerate kidney function decline; for another thing, with the growth of
the baby, more pressure will be added to these cysts in your kidneys, which can
lead to cyst burst. Frankly, if the cyst burst during pregnancy, there is no
other method but losing the baby.
In additon, parenchyma is the most important area in kidney, and the sonogram
show weak parenchyma. In short, before getting pregnant, shrinking these cysts
in your kidney is a necessity for your condition.
From the blood test, there is no creatinine level increase and the eGFR is
55.4. GFR is glomerular filtration reate and it reflects the actual kidney
function.
For normal person, GFR should be around 100. So, nearly 40% kidney
function decline has already occurred. For this situation, another pregancy
might make kidney condition even worse.
The main kidney problems with your case are these cysts. Corresponding
treatments should focus on shrinking these cysts. If you are not planning for
another baby, you can only accept some Chinese Herbal Medicine which can shrink
these cysts to block further kidney function decline. Your overall kidney
function is above 50%, and with more than half kidney functioning normally,
there is no influence to the person's life quality nor life span.
If you are planning to have another baby, I suggest your taking the
systematic treatment of Chinese Herbal Medicine and Immunotherapy. The former
one works on shrinking cysts, and Immunotherapy works on replenishing more
functional kidney cells. This systematic treatment gives you more guarantee to
keep normal kidney function duiring and after the pregnancy.
