Q: I am 27 years old and I was diagnosed with Polycystic Kidney Disease
several months ago. The doctor said that more than 50% of my kidneys are covered
with renal cysts. What should I expect from Polycystic Kidney Disease?
A: Polycystic Kidney Disease progresses rapidly after one’s 30s. If you take
no measures on your kidney problems, surely your renal cysts will enlarge both
in size and in number. Your renal cysts will spread on the surface of polycystic
kidneys. Over the time, when your kidneys are destroyed in a large degree, high
blood pressure will appear, which will worsen your kidney condition in return.
Normally, people with Polycystic Kidney Disease will develop into renal failure
at their 50s and they will be the candidates of dialysis and kidney transplant
when kidneys rarely function.
No matter your present condition is good or not, one thing is sure that your
child will have at least 50% chance to get the disease. Thereby, it is necessary
to send your child for further tests. However, in many families, many children
escape from the “genetic curse”.
Once you are diagnosed with PKD, you are expected to live with it in the rest
life for there is no cure for PKD in the world by far. However, it doesn’t you
have to suffer everything you should. In fact, if you can control the size of
renal cysts, you can live a pretty full life with PKD. Many patients who get a
control of the disease, live the disease until they die from other
conditions.
Surgery fails to ensure control all number of cysts. Usually several months
after the surgery, your renal cysts will come back again. Surgery only takes the
larger cysts, which makes more space for the small ones to enlarge faster than
before.
Chinese herbal medicine is another option which can stop the growth of all
renal cysts and then shrink them into smaller and smaller by affecting lining
cells.
Lining cells keep generating cyst fluids constantly and this is the root
why renal cysts enlarge discontinuously. Many patients are expected to live a
normal life after Chinese herbal treatment, because their renal cysts are
controlled small enough which will not damage your kidney tissues.
