Nephrotic syndrome (NS) patients suffer varying degrees of edema. It is often the first sign of serious conditions NS and often will spill serous cavity.
Dialysis may be applied to alleviate edema by removing excess water from the plasma.
Why is edema in NS?
Massive proteinuria is typical and necessary symptom of nephrotic syndrome. When the membrane glomerular filtration is damaged, plasma protein will pass through this membrane and when the amount is beyond the capacity of the re-absorption, these plasma proteins (particularly albumin) was filtered in the urine. Loss cause large amount of protein hypoalbuminemia lower colloid osmotic pressure of plasma and cause fluid in the blood vessels to flow into the interstitial tissues. This is the main reason of edema and retention of water and sodium is one of factors aggravating edema.
Patients usually have swollen in the morning and other forms of edema eyes include pitting edema in the legs, pleural effusion (fluid in the pleural cavity), pulmonary edema, ascites (fluid in the peritoneal cavity) and edema throughout the body.
Dialysis is an effective renal replacement therapy that can help eliminate excessive metabolic wastes and toxins in the body and correct disorders of water, electrolyte and acid-base balance. Can help remove excessive fluids in plasma and interstitial cavities to alleviate tissue edema.
Although dialysis can eliminate edema, can not repair damaged glomerular membrane filtration and reverse the continuing deterioration of renal function, edema will be very easy to relapse. What's more, because dialysis is a renal replacement therapy, patients will become dependent on dialysis if it is the only treatment for a long time. Therefore, treatments that can help repair glomerular filtration membrane and increase GFR should be received. Some herbs have regulatory functions and repair and cause fewer long-term side effects.
